Monthly Sightings Reports

HWDT’s Community Sightings Network encourages residents, local wildlife operators and visitors to the area to report their sightings of whales, dolphins and porpoises to HWDT. This information is important because it contributes to our understanding of where and when particular species occur. Report your sighting HERE.

Each month HWDT publishes a summary report of the sightings recorded via our Community Sightings Network. In summer we receive the greatest number of sightings while winter is a quiet time. This is partly due to the number of species present but also reflects the sea state and number of people on the water watching for whales, dolphins and porpoises. In winter, fewer people are watching and the sea state more frequently makes sightings difficult, or even impossible. Also non-resident species have migrated for the winter. At this time of year HWDT receives more strandings reports than at other time as storms can wash animals ashore. These seasonal variations will be reflected in our reports.

October 2011

We have still been receiving sightings this month, inspite of the weather and our sightings are up on last year. We had 22 definite sightings of 66 animals and 4 probable sightings of 26 animals.

4 definite sightings of Bottlenose dolphins were reported recording 13 animals and 3 of these sightings were from around the Isle of Mull. A probable sighting of a pod of 14 Bottlenose dolphins was reported from Machrihanish. 2 Common dolphins were also reported.

Probably on account of the rougher October seas we have had 3 definite and 1 probable sightings of dolphin species which couldn't be identified

As usual, Harbour porpoise were reported in higher numbers, 7 definite sightings of 34 animals, including one large group of 13 off the Isle of Bute were reported, another 10 strong group off Bute was recorded as a probable sighting.

It was a quieter month as expected for the Basking sharks, with only 2 sightings of single animals.

A lucky individual reported a pod of 6 Orca (Killer whales) off Lewis, and a rare Sei whale was spotted West of the island of Seil. This is only our second reported sighting of a Sei whale! We had one sighting of a minke whale off Arran and one sighting of an unidentified Baleen whale off Ardnamurchan.

Please remember it's never too late to report any of your sightings to us!
